NT Text: Revelation 22:18-19

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): Analogy + Longitudinal Theme

Significance: Deuteronomy 4:2 commands, "Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of YHWH your God that I give you." Revelation 22:18-19 echoes this with eschatological sanctions: "If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes away from the words of this book of prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life." Both texts protect the integrity of God's revealed word with a double prohibition against addition and subtraction. Deuteronomy places this at the beginning of the Torah's exposition; Revelation places it at the end of the entire canon, creating a bookend effect. The escalation is from covenantal sanctions (loss of the promised land) to eschatological sanctions (plagues and loss of the tree of life). This allusion frames the entire biblical canon between Deuteronomy's covenant stipulation and Revelation's prophetic warning, underscoring the sacred inviolability of Scripture.
