Anchor Text: Isa 11:1-10 — A Shoot from the Stump of Jesse
Significance: The title "Root of David" (hē rhiza Dauid) in Revelation 5:5 alludes to Isaiah 11:1, 10, where the messianic figure is both a "shoot from the stump of Jesse" (a descendant) and "the root of Jesse" (the source). This paradox — being both root and branch, both ancestor and descendant — carries profound Christological weight that John exploits. The elder declares Christ "has triumphed" (enikēsen) to open the scroll, using the vocabulary of military conquest that connects to Isaiah 11's description of the Spirit-endowed ruler who will "strike the earth with the rod of his mouth" (Isa 11:4) and gather the nations (Isa 11:10). Isaiah's vision of a restored Davidic ruler who is simultaneously the source of the dynasty finds its resolution in Christ, who is both David's son (descendant) and David's Lord (source), as Jesus Himself argued from Psalm 110:1 (Matt 22:41-46).
