Significance: The cry of the martyrs under the altar — "How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You avenge our blood?" — echoes Psalm 79:10, a communal lament over the destruction of Jerusalem and the shedding of the saints' blood. The Psalmist appeals to God's honor before the nations: the unpunished blood of God's servants makes it appear that YHWH is powerless. The martyrs in Revelation similarly appeal to God's character as "holy and true" (hagios kai alēthinos) — holiness demands that injustice be addressed, and truthfulness demands that God fulfill His promise to vindicate His people. The phrase "avenge our blood" (ekdikeis to haima hēmōn) recalls the covenantal principle that innocent blood cries out for justice (cf. Gen 4:10). The pattern of lament-waiting-vindication structures the entire seal sequence, assuring readers that God's apparent delay is not indifference but purposeful patience.
