Anchor Text: Gen 12:1-3 — The Abrahamic Blessing
Significance: Noah's oracle in Genesis 9:26 blesses Shem uniquely: "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem (בָּרוּךְ יְהוָה אֱלֹהֵי שֵׁם)," identifying YHWH specifically as Shem's God and promising that Canaan would serve him. Genesis 12:1-3 narrows this Shemite blessing further to one of Shem's descendants, Abram, with the promise "I will bless you... and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you." The verbal link through בָּרַךְ (to bless) connects these texts: Noah's blessing on the line of Shem becomes the Abrahamic blessing, and the scope expands from Shem's household to "all the families of the earth." Genesis 9:27 also promises that Japheth will "dwell in the tents of Shem," anticipating the Gentile inclusion embedded in the Abrahamic promise. Together these passages trace the line of blessing from Noah through Shem to Abraham, progressively narrowing and then universalizing God's redemptive purposes.
