Text: Leviticus 17:3
OT Text Referred to: Exodus 20:24
Subject: sacrifices exclusively at tent of meeting
Source: Keil and Delitzsch, Commentary on the Old Testament (1866)
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme
Significance: Exodus 20:24 permits altar construction in various locations where God causes His name to be remembered, while Leviticus 17:3 restricts all slaughter to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting: "Anyone from the house of Israel who slaughters an ox, lamb, or goat in the camp or outside the camp" must bring it to the tabernacle. Leviticus narrows the sacrificial geography from multiple permitted sites to a single authorized location, ensuring that all blood is properly handled by the priests. This centralization of slaughter prevents the shedding of blood at unauthorized locations and eliminates the possibility of sacrificing "to the goat demons" (שְׂעִירִם, se'irim) at scattered rural altars (Lev 17:7).
