Significance: Numbers 36 addresses the concern that if the daughters of Zelophehad marry outside their tribe, their inherited land could transfer to another tribe at the Jubilee year. Leviticus 25:8ff establishes the Jubilee (יוֹבֵל, yovel) system in which all land returns to its original tribal allotment every fiftieth year. The Numbers 36 legislation directly responds to the Jubilee provision: if heiresses marry outside their tribe, the Jubilee land-return mechanism would permanently transfer territory from one tribe to another, defeating the Jubilee's purpose of preserving tribal boundaries. The solution -- requiring heiresses to marry within their tribe (Num 36:6) -- shows how different Pentateuchal laws interact and require harmonization.
