Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme
Significance: Exodus 34:24 ties God's promise to "drive out the nations" (אוֹרִישׁ גּוֹיִם, orish goyim) and "enlarge your borders" (וְהִרְחַבְתִּי אֶת־גְּבֻלֶךָ, ve-hirchavti et-gevulekha) to Israel's faithfulness in pilgrimage worship. Deuteronomy 12:2-28 develops the worship side of this covenant equation by commanding destruction of pagan shrines (v. 2-3) and centralizing all sacrifice at God's chosen place (v. 5-7). Both texts share the underlying logic that secure possession of the land depends on pure worship: God protects the land when Israel worships rightly, and Israel must destroy every competing worship site to maintain that covenant relationship. Deuteronomy expands the brief Exodus command into detailed legislation governing sacrificial practice, the slaughter of animals, and the proper disposition of tithes and offerings.
