Deuteronomy 22:9-11 to Leviticus 19:19

Text: Deuteronomy 22:9-11

OT Text Referred to: Leviticus 19:19

Subject: prohibition of mixing kinds

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): None

Significance: Leviticus 19:19 prohibits three types of mixing: breeding different kinds of animals (כִּלְאַיִם, kil'ayim), sowing a field with two kinds of seed, and wearing a garment made of two kinds of material (שַׁעַטְנֵז, sha'atnez). Deuteronomy 22:9-11 restates all three prohibitions with greater specificity: do not sow your vineyard with two kinds of seed, do not plow with an ox and donkey together, and do not wear clothing woven of wool and linen (sha'atnez). The Deuteronomic version contextualizes these rules for settled agricultural life and adds practical consequences — the vineyard's yield will be "forfeited" (תִּקְדַּשׁ, tiqdash, lit. "sanctified/devoted") to the sanctuary if violated. Both texts embed the principle that God's created order of distinct categories (כִּלְאַיִם) must be respected.
