Text: Deuteronomy 24:10-13
OT Text Referred to: Exodus 22:26-27
Subject: garment pledge law expanded
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): None
Significance: Exodus 22:26-27 establishes the basic garment-pledge protection: a cloak taken as collateral must be returned before sunset because "it is his only covering." Deuteronomy 24:10-13 develops this into a comprehensive pledge-collection procedure: the creditor must not enter the debtor's house to seize the pledge, must wait outside, and must return it before sunset so that the debtor will "sleep in his cloak and bless you, and it will be regarded as righteousness (צְדָקָה, tsedaqah) for you before the LORD." Deuteronomy adds both procedural protections (staying outside the house) and a positive spiritual incentive—returning the pledge is counted as an act of righteousness before God.
