Text: Deuteronomy 24:14
OT Text Referred to: Leviticus 19:13
Subject: wage regulations
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): None
Significance: Leviticus 19:13 prohibits withholding a hired worker's wages (שְׂכַר שָׂכִיר, sekhar sakhir) overnight. Deuteronomy 24:14 develops this into a broader command not to "oppress a hired worker who is poor and needy" (עָנִי וְאֶבְיוֹן, ani ve'evyon), "whether he is one of your brothers or a foreigner living in your land." The Deuteronomic expansion notably extends protection to foreign workers alongside Israelites and adds the explicit consequence that the wronged worker "may cry out against you to the LORD." Both texts protect the economically vulnerable from exploitation, but Deuteronomy heightens the urgency by naming the divine court of appeal.
