Significance: Genesis 18:18 declares that Abraham will become a גּוֹי גָּדוֹל (goy gadol, "great nation") and that all nations will be blessed through him. The Deuteronomy 26 firstfruits liturgy recites the historical fulfillment of precisely this promise: "My father was a wandering Aramean... and became a great nation, mighty and numerous" (v. 5), using the same גּוֹי גָּדוֹל language. The liturgy then traces God's deliverance from Egypt and gift of the land, demonstrating that the Abrahamic blessing has begun to be realized in Israel's national life. By embedding the patriarchal promise in a recurring worship confession, Deuteronomy ensures that each generation recognizes its firstfruits offering as evidence that God has kept His word to Abraham.
