Text: Deuteronomy 26:5-10
OT Text Referred to: Numbers 20:15-16
Subject: salvation history recital
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): None
Significance: Numbers 20:15-16 contains a concise salvation history recital addressed to Edom's king: descent to Egypt, oppression, crying out to the LORD, and deliverance by an angel. Deuteronomy 26:5-10 prescribes a nearly identical recital as the permanent liturgy for firstfruits offerings: wandering ancestor, descent to Egypt, oppression, crying out, and deliverance "with a mighty hand and outstretched arm." Both share the formulaic pattern of צָעַק (tsa'aq, "cry out") followed by divine response. The key difference is context: Numbers uses the creed diplomatically to establish kinship with Edom, while Deuteronomy institutionalizes it as Israel's defining worship confession, recited at every firstfruits presentation throughout their generations.
