Text: Deuteronomy 7:1

OT Text Referred to: Exodus 34:11

Subject: driving out the Canaanite nations

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Direct Quotation

Connection Method(s): None

Significance: Exodus 34:11 lists six nations God will drive out (גֹּרֵשׁ, goresh) before Israel — "the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites." Deuteronomy 7:1 repeats this list with the addition of the Girgashites (making seven nations) and expands the mandate: not only will God drive them out, but Israel must "devote them to complete destruction" (הַחֲרֵם תַּחֲרִים, hacharem tacharim). Deuteronomy intensifies the Exodus command by specifying the חֵרֶם (cherem, "ban/devotion to destruction") and adding prohibitions on intermarriage (v. 3) and treaty-making (v. 2). The Deuteronomic expansion makes explicit the practical requirements only implied in the briefer Exodus formulation, as Moses prepares the next generation for actual conquest.
