Significance: Joshua 15:14-19 and Judges 1:10-15 are nearly verbatim parallel accounts of the same events: Caleb's defeat of the three Anakite clans at Hebron, his challenge offering his daughter Acsah to whoever captures Kiriath-sepher, and Othniel's victory and subsequent marriage. The Judges account reproduces the Joshua narrative with minimal variation, including the distinctive episode where Acsah requests springs of water (גֻּלֹּת מַיִם, gullot mayim) in addition to her Negev land. By retelling this account at the opening of Judges, the narrator establishes Othniel as a model of faithful conquest, setting up his later role as Israel's first judge (Judges 3:9-11) and providing a benchmark against which subsequent judges will be measured.
