Text: 1 Kings 1:5
OT Text Referred to: 2 Samuel 3:4
Subject: Adonijah's bid for the throne based on birth order
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): None
Significance: In 1 Kings 1:5, Adonijah exalts himself saying "I will be king" (אֲנִי אֶמְלֹךְ, 'ani 'emlokh), acquiring chariots and runners — the same self-aggrandizing behavior as Absalom (2 Sam 15:1). The allusion to 2 Samuel 3:4, which identifies Adonijah as David's fourth son by Haggith, born in Hebron, establishes his basis for claiming the throne: with Amnon and Absalom dead and Chileab apparently deceased or disqualified, Adonijah was the eldest surviving prince. The connection shows how the Davidic succession crisis arose from the very household structure David built during his Hebron years, and how human birth-order claims stood in tension with God's election of Solomon.
