1 Kings 2:1 to 2 Samuel 7:29

Text: 1 Kings 2:1

OT Text Referred to: 2 Samuel 7:29

Subject: David commissions Solomon

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment

Significance: David's deathbed charge in 1 Kings 2:1 reflects his confidence in the prayer of 2 Samuel 7:29: "Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before You" (וּבְבִרְכָתְךָ יְבֹרַךְ בֵּית עַבְדְּךָ לְעוֹלָם). David's dying words to Solomon presuppose that God has indeed blessed the Davidic house perpetually, as David prayed. The charge to obey Torah "so that the LORD may fulfill His promise" (1 Kgs 2:4) shows David translating his prayer for divine blessing into a practical commission for his heir — the promise is sure, but its enjoyment requires covenantal obedience.
