OT Text Referred to: Joshua 1:5
Subject: David commissions Solomon
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): Analogy
Significance: David's charge to Solomon in 1 Kings 2:1-3 closely echoes God's commission to Joshua in Joshua 1:5-9. Both use the imperative "be strong" (חֲזַק, chazaq), both command obedience to the Torah of Moses, and both promise divine presence and prospering. God told Joshua, "No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life... I will not fail you or forsake you" (Josh 1:5); David tells Solomon to "keep the charge of the LORD your God... so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you turn" (1 Kgs 2:3). This verbal echo positions Solomon as a new Joshua figure, receiving a commission to lead Israel in faithful obedience at a moment of leadership transition.
