Text: 1 Chronicles 11:10
OT Text Referred to: 2 Samuel 23:8
Subject: David's mighty men
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): None
Significance: Both texts introduce the catalog of David's mighty men (גִּבּוֹרִים, gibborim) with their chief warrior. 2 Samuel 23:8 names him "Josheb-basshebeth the Tahchemonite, chief of the Three" who killed eight hundred men with his spear. 1 Chronicles 11:10 provides the theological framing absent in Samuel: these warriors "gave his kingship strong support... to make him king according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel." The Chronicler thus interprets the mighty men not merely as military heroes but as instruments of divine purpose in establishing David's throne. Name and number variants between the two lists (Josheb-basshebeth vs. Jashobeam; 800 vs. 300 killed) reflect different textual traditions of the same warrior catalog.
