Significance: David's warriors risked their lives to bring water from the well at Bethlehem, and David refused to drink it, instead pouring it out before the LORD, declaring it equivalent to the "blood" (dam) of these men. This act echoes Deuteronomy 12:16's command to pour blood on the ground "like water," but inverts the analogy: here water is treated as blood because it cost human life. David's gesture transforms a military exploit into a quasi-sacrificial act, treating the water as sacred because of the mortal risk involved in obtaining it.
