1 Chronicles 11:4 to 2 Samuel 5:6

Text: 1 Chronicles 11:4

OT Text Referred to: 2 Samuel 5:6

Subject: David captures Jerusalem

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Direct Quotation

Connection Method(s): None

Significance: Both texts record David's march against the Jebusites to capture Jerusalem, called יְבוּס (Yevus) in both accounts. 2 Samuel 5:6 preserves the Jebusites' taunt that "even the blind and the lame can repel you," while 1 Chronicles 11:4 identifies the site more simply as "Jebus, which is Jerusalem." The Chronicler omits the taunt about the blind and lame but adds the detail that "Joab son of Zeruiah went up first" and was therefore made commander — information absent from Samuel. This editorial choice shifts focus from the Jebusites' defiance to the military achievement of David's men, consistent with the Chronicler's interest in establishing the meritorious basis for administrative appointments.
