OT Text Referred to: 2 Samuel 5:11-12
Subject: Hiram builds David's palace; kingdom established
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Direct Quotation
Connection Method(s): None
Significance: These parallel accounts of Hiram's embassy and palace construction are virtually identical. Both record that Hiram sent messengers, cedar logs (עֲצֵי אֲרָזִים, atsei arazim), carpenters, and stonemasons. Both conclude with David's recognition that "the LORD had established him as king over Israel" and had "exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel." The Chronicler preserves this text nearly word-for-word, using it to demonstrate that gentile recognition (through Hiram) confirmed what God had ordained. The notice that David's kingdom was exalted "for the sake of" (בַּעֲבוּר, ba'avur) Israel emphasizes that Davidic kingship exists not for royal self-aggrandizement but for the welfare of God's covenant people.
