OT Text Referred to: 1 Kings 3:4
Subject: Solomon worships at Gibeon where the tabernacle stood
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): None
Significance: In 1 Kings 3:4, Solomon goes to Gibeon "the great high place" to sacrifice a thousand burnt offerings (עֹלוֹת, 'olot). The connection to 1 Chronicles 16:39-40 explains why Gibeon was significant: the Chronicler records that David stationed Zadok the priest at "the tabernacle of the LORD at the high place of Gibeon" to offer burnt offerings continually "according to all that is written in the Law of the LORD." This Chronicler's note retroactively legitimizes Solomon's worship at Gibeon — it was not an unauthorized high place but the location of the Mosaic tabernacle with its legitimate altar and Zadokite priesthood, distinct from the ark's tent in Jerusalem.
