Significance: These parallel lists of David's cabinet officials open with the identical assessment: David administered מִשְׁפָּט וּצְדָקָה (mishpat utsdaqah, "justice and righteousness"). Both name Joab as army commander, Jehoshaphat as recorder, Zadok and Ahimelech/Abimelech as priests, and Seraiah/Shavsha as secretary. The most theologically significant difference appears in the final entry: 2 Samuel 8:18 states "David's sons were priests" (כֹּהֲנִים, kohanim), while 1 Chronicles 18:17 reads "David's sons were chief officials at the king's side" (הָרִאשֹׁנִים לְיַד הַמֶּלֶךְ). The Chronicler's alteration reflects strict Levitical theology: since David's sons were from Judah, not Levi, they could not properly bear the title "priest." This editorial adjustment reveals the Chronicler's concern for post-exilic worship regularity.
