Significance: These are parallel accounts of the full Ammonite-Aramean war narrative, from Hanun's insult of David's messengers through the final defeat of Hadadezer's forces. Both texts share the key phrase about David sending messengers to show חֶסֶד (chesed, "loyal kindness") to Hanun son of Nahash, and both record Joab's speech dividing the battle lines. The Chronicler reproduces the narrative nearly verbatim but makes small adjustments: 1 Chronicles specifies "1,000 talents of silver" for the mercenary hire and slightly reshapes the Aramean troop numbers. These differences reflect the Chronicler's post-exilic perspective, where David's military dominance demonstrates the divine establishment of his kingdom as the necessary precondition for Solomon's temple project.
