OT Text Referred to: Genesis 46:12
Subject: Genealogies of Judah Through Family of David
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Echo
Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme
Significance: Genesis 46:12 lists the sons of Judah who went to Egypt, noting that "Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan" and recording "the sons of Perez: Hezron and Hamul." 1 Chronicles 2:3-5 reproduces this same data, preserving both the judgment on Er and the Perez-Hezron line, then extends it through Ram, Amminadab, Nahshon, Salmon, Boaz, Obed, Jesse, and David (2:9-15). The Genesis migration list thus provides the Chronicler's starting point for tracing the Davidic genealogy: the five sons of Judah who went to Egypt, narrowed to Perez and Hezron, become the root of the royal line. What appears in Genesis as a simple census entry becomes in Chronicles the beginning of an unbroken chain leading to Israel's greatest king.
