Text: 1 Chronicles 22:2-5
OT Text Referred to: 2 Samuel 7:1-17
Subject: David's temple preparations fulfilling the covenant oracle
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment
Significance: 2 Samuel 7:1-17 records the oracle forbidding David from building the temple but promising his son would do so. 1 Chronicles 22:2-5 shows David's response: though forbidden from building, he made extensive preparations — gathering stonecutters, iron, bronze, and cedar in abundance. The Chronicler explicitly connects these preparations to the oracle: David "provided materials in great quantity before his death" because "Solomon my son is young and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the LORD must be exceedingly magnificent" (1 Chr 22:5). This material is entirely absent from Samuel-Kings and represents the Chronicler's distinctive contribution: David obeyed God's prohibition on building while maximizing his contribution within those limits, modeling faithful obedience that serves the next generation.
