Anchor Text: 2 Sam 7:12-16 — The Davidic Covenant

Significance: 2 Samuel 7:14 establishes the father-son relationship between God and the Davidic king: "I will be his Father, and he will be My son" (אֲנִי אֶהְיֶה לּוֹ לְאָב וְהוּא יִהְיֶה לִּי לְבֵן). 1 Chronicles 28:7 adds a conditional dimension absent from the original oracle: "I will establish his kingdom forever, if he continues to carry out My commandments and ordinances as he does today." The Chronicler reshapes the unconditional promise of 2 Samuel 7 by inserting the condition of ongoing Torah obedience (אִם יֶחֱזַק לַעֲשׂוֹת, im yechezaq la'asot, "if he is resolute to do"), which David then uses to exhort Solomon. This conditional reframing serves the Chronicler's pastoral purpose: the post-exilic community needed to understand that while the dynasty was irrevocable in principle, individual kings bore responsibility for obedience.
