Text: 1 Chronicles 29:23
OT Text Referred to: 1 Kings 2:12
Subject: Solomon sits upon throne
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): None
Significance: Both texts record Solomon taking David's throne, but with a striking theological difference. In 1 Kings 2:12, "Solomon sat on the throne of his father David, and his kingdom was firmly established" — a straightforwardly political statement. The Chronicler in 1 Chronicles 29:23 reframes the same event: "Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD (כִּסֵּא יְהוָה, kisse' YHWH) as king instead of his father David." By calling it "the throne of the LORD" rather than "the throne of David," the Chronicler makes explicit what Kings leaves implicit: Israel's kingship is a delegated rule under divine sovereignty. Solomon does not merely succeed David; he occupies Yahweh's own throne as His earthly vice-regent.
