Text: 2 Chronicles 18:1
OT Text Referred to: 1 Kings 22:2
Subject: alliance of Jehoshaphat and Ahab against Aram
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): None
Significance: Both texts open the account of Jehoshaphat's alliance with Ahab for the campaign against Ramoth-gilead. In 1 Kings 22:2, Jehoshaphat "went down" to visit Ahab, while 2 Chronicles 18:1 adds the theological note that Jehoshaphat "allied himself with Ahab by marriage" (וַיִּתְחַתֵּן לְאַחְאָב, vayyitchatten le'Ach'av), identifying the political alliance as a marriage alliance. The Chronicler's addition explains the basis of the military cooperation and also sets up the prophetic rebuke that follows: "Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the LORD?" (2 Chr 19:2). The two accounts together show how an innocent-seeming state visit had deep covenantal implications.
