Text: 2 Chronicles 19:5-7
OT Text Referred to: Deuteronomy 1:17
Subject: Impartial judicial administration
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): None
Significance: Moses commands judges to show no partiality because "judgment belongs to God" (הַמִּשְׁפָּט לֵאלֹהִים הוּא, hammishpat le'lohim hu), and Jehoshaphat echoes this principle verbatim when appointing judges throughout Judah: "you are not judging for man, but for the LORD." Both texts insist on impartiality, freedom from bribery, and equal hearing for small and great, showing that Jehoshaphat deliberately models his judicial reform on the Mosaic prototype. The Chronicler presents Jehoshaphat's reform as covenant faithfulness—implementing in the monarchy what Moses instituted in the wilderness, thereby affirming that righteous judgment remains a divine prerogative mediated through human courts.
