Significance: Leviticus 24:1-4 establishes the priestly duty to maintain the lamps (נֵרוֹת) before the LORD continually (תָּמִיד, tamid), using pure beaten olive oil on the golden lampstand. 2 Chronicles 29:7 records that previous kings "shut the doors of the portico and extinguished the lamps," explicitly violating this perpetual obligation. The Chronicler uses this detail to demonstrate the depth of Judah's apostasy under Ahaz: the most basic Levitical sanctuary services — the perpetual light — had been discontinued. Hezekiah's reform (29:3-36) represents the systematic restoration of every Levitical regulation that had been abandoned, beginning with reopening the temple doors and relighting the lamps as Torah requires.
