Significance: Deuteronomy 8:2 explains that God led Israel through the wilderness "to humble you and test you in order to know what was in your heart" (לְנַסֹּתְךָ לָדַעַת אֶת אֲשֶׁר בִּלְבָבְךָ, lenasotekha lada'at et 'asher bilvavekha). 2 Chronicles 32:24-26 applies this same principle to Hezekiah: after his miraculous healing, "his heart was proud" and only later did he humble himself. The Chronicler presents Hezekiah's illness and recovery as a divine test that revealed the condition of his heart—precisely the purpose Moses identified for wilderness testing. The narrative shows that the Deuteronomic principle of testing-to-reveal extends beyond the wilderness generation to individual kings, with prosperity and divine favor functioning as the test just as effectively as wilderness deprivation.
