Significance: In 2 Kings 21:3-5, Manasseh builds altars to all the host of heaven in the two courts of the temple — a supreme sacrilege, placing pagan astral worship in the very precincts of Yahweh's house. The Chronicler in 2 Chronicles 33:21-25 describes how Amon continued these practices, "sacrificed to all the carved images that his father Manasseh had made, and served them." The Chronicler's crucial addition is that while Manasseh eventually "humbled himself greatly" in captivity, Amon "increased guilt" (הִרְבָּה אַשְׁמָה). The father repented; the son refused to, making Amon's reign the unrepentant continuation of Manasseh's original rebellion.
