Text: 2 Chronicles 35:12
OT Text Referred to: Leviticus 3:14
Subject: Yahweh's portion allocation
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): None
Significance: Leviticus 3:14-16 prescribes that the fat (חֵלֶב, chelev) portions of the peace offering — including the fat covering the entrails, the kidneys, and the lobe of the liver — must be burned on the altar as "food, an offering made by fire" to the LORD. 2 Chronicles 35:12 records that during Josiah's great Passover, the Levites "set aside the burnt offerings to give them to the subdivisions of the people's families, to offer to the LORD as written in the Book of Moses" — separating God's fat-portion (חֵלֶב) according to the Levitical procedure. The Chronicler's emphasis on following "the Book of Moses" demonstrates that Josiah's reform deliberately reinstated the Leviticus 3 fat-allocation procedure that prior generations had neglected.
