OT Text Referred to: Leviticus 3:3-5
Subject: fat portion procedures at Josiah's Passover
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): None
Significance: Leviticus 3:3-5 prescribes the complete peace offering fat-burning procedure: the fat covering the entrails, kidneys with their fat, and the lobe of the liver are to be burned on the altar "on top of the burnt offering" as "a food offering made by fire, a pleasing aroma to the LORD." 2 Chronicles 35:12 reports that Josiah's Passover Levites followed this procedure: they separated the fat portions to be offered to the LORD "as written in the Book of Moses." The Chronicler presents Josiah's Passover as an exemplary restoration of Mosaic sacrificial procedures, with the Leviticus 3 fat-burning protocol serving as the standard against which the reform's faithfulness is measured.
