Subject: Jehoahaz deposed; Jehoiakim installed — parallel account

Significance: These are parallel accounts of the rapid transition from Jehoahaz to Jehoiakim under Egyptian control. Both record Neco's deposition of Jehoahaz and appointment of his brother, the renaming to Jehoiakim, and the imposition of tribute. Kings adds that Jehoiakim taxed the people to pay the tribute, while the Chronicler adds that Neco "took Jehoahaz his brother and brought him to Egypt" (2 Chr 36:4). Both accounts mark the beginning of Judah's final descent: from this point forward, Judah's kings are puppet rulers installed by foreign powers — first Egypt, then Babylon.
