Significance: These are parallel accounts of the final catastrophe — the temple's destruction and Judah's exile. Kings provides extensive detail: the burning of the temple and palace, the demolition of the walls, the deportation of the population leaving only the poorest, the inventory of bronze temple furnishings carried away, and the execution of leaders at Riblah. The Chronicler compresses this into three verses but adds the profound theological note that the land "enjoyed its sabbath rests" during the exile, "to fulfill the word of the LORD by Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed its sabbaths — all the days of its desolation it kept sabbath, to fulfill seventy years" (2 Chr 36:21). This connects the exile to Leviticus 26:34-35's warning about sabbath-year violations.
