2 Chronicles 6:36-39 to Deuteronomy 4:27

Text: 2 Chronicles 6:36-39

OT Text Referred to: Deuteronomy 4:27

Subject: Exile and repentant prayer

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): None

Significance: Solomon's seventh and final petition directly envisions exile: "if they sin against You...and You give them over to the enemy, and they are carried away captive to a land far or near" (2 Chr 6:36-37). This scenario echoes Deuteronomy 4:27's warning: "The LORD will scatter you among the peoples" (vehefits YHWH etkhem ba-ammim). Solomon's prayer provides the exilic remedy Deuteronomy anticipates: if the exiles repent "in the land of their captivity" and pray toward the chosen land and city, God will hear from heaven. For the Chronicler's post-exilic audience, this petition was their lived reality—and its inclusion in the dedication prayer validated their return.
