Text: Nehemiah 10:35
OT Text Referred to: Deuteronomy 26:2
Subject: tithe renewal
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): None
Significance: Deuteronomy 26:2 requires Israel to bring firstfruits (רֵאשִׁית, reshit) of their produce to the place God will choose, and Nehemiah 10:35 records the post-exilic community pledging to "bring the firstfruits of our ground and of every fruit of every tree year by year to the house of the LORD." Both texts link the offering of firstfruits to the authorized worship site—the "place the LORD will choose" in Deuteronomy becomes the rebuilt temple in Nehemiah. The restored community's pledge to resume this practice demonstrates that the Deuteronomic agricultural worship system remained normative for Israel's self-understanding even after exile disrupted its observance for generations.
