Significance: Leviticus 25:42 declares that Israelites "are My servants (עֲבָדַי, avadai) whom I brought out of the land of Egypt; they must not be sold as slaves." Nehemiah 5:1-5 records the post-exilic community's outcry that their own people are enslaving fellow Jews due to debt and famine: "We are forcing our sons and daughters to be slaves." Nehemiah's reform in chapter 5 directly applies the Levitical prohibition against Israelite enslavement, demanding the return of confiscated lands, vineyards, and houses. The crisis demonstrates that the Levitical protections for the poor remained operative standards for the restored community, and their violation constituted a return to the oppression from which God had originally delivered them.
