Significance: Leviticus 25:42 establishes that Israelites, as God's servants redeemed from Egypt, must not be sold into permanent slavery. Nehemiah 5:8 exposes the absurdity of the post-exilic situation: "We have bought back our Jewish brothers who were sold to the nations, but now you yourselves are selling your brothers, only for them to be sold back to us!" Nehemiah's argument reveals a devastating irony — the community invested resources to redeem Jews enslaved by foreigners, while simultaneously enslaving their own countrymen through debt. The Levitical prohibition against Israelite enslavement is thus violated by the very community that claims to uphold Torah observance.
