Significance: Deuteronomy 9:3 assures Israel that "the LORD your God goes across ahead of you" to destroy and subdue the nations before them. Nehemiah 9:24 confirms this promise was kept: "their descendants went in and took possession of the land, and You subdued before them (וַתַּכְנַע, vattakhna') the inhabitants of the land." Both texts use the language of divine agency in the conquest—God is the one who subdues, not Israel by its own power.
