Significance: Nehemiah 9:29 directly quotes the Leviticus 18:5 life-formula in its historical prayer of confession: Israel "sinned against Your ordinances, which, if a man does, he will live by them" (אֲשֶׁר יַעֲשֶׂה אָדָם וְחָיָה בָהֶם). The Levites use this citation to indict Israel's history of rebellion — they were given ordinances designed to produce life, but "stubbornly refused to obey" (9:29).
