Text: Psalm 106:24
OT Text Referred to: Numbers 14:30
Subject: wilderness judgment
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): None
Significance: Numbers 14:30 declares that the entire census-counted generation will be excluded from the land, except Caleb and Joshua. Psalm 106:24 distills the cause: "They despised the pleasant land; they did not believe His promise." The Hebrew אֶרֶץ חֶמְדָּה ('erets chemdah, "pleasant/desirable land") in the psalm contrasts sharply with the spies' negative report -- the land was objectively desirable, but unbelief caused Israel to reject what God had already given. The psalm's retrospective interpretation identifies the fundamental issue not as military weakness but as failure to trust God's דָּבָר (davar, "word/promise").
