Psalm 136:2-3 to Deuteronomy 10:17

Text: Psalm 136:2-3

OT Text Referred to: Deuteronomy 10:17

Subject: God of gods and Lord of lords

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): None

Significance: Moses declares that "the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords" (אֱלֹהֵי הָאֱלֹהִים וַאֲדֹנֵי הָאֲדֹנִים, 'elohe ha'elohim va'adone ha'adonim), and Psalm 136:2-3 transforms this confessional formula into antiphonal worship: "Give thanks to the God of gods... Give thanks to the Lord of lords." The psalmist takes Moses's theological declaration and converts it into the opening summons of a liturgical hymn, making congregational praise the proper response to the truth Moses proclaimed. Both texts assert Yahweh's absolute supremacy over all other powers, but the psalm embeds this truth in the refrain "His loving devotion endures forever" (כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ, ki le'olam chasdo), grounding divine sovereignty in covenant faithfulness.
