Text: Psalms 2:8-9

OT Text Referred to: Genesis 49:10

Subject: Scepter against nations (C) (* see Judah-king networks)

Source: John Gill, Exposition of the Entire Bible (1763)

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): Promise-Fulfillment + Longitudinal Theme

Anchor Text: Psalm 2 — You Are My Son

Significance: Psalm 2:8-9 promises the anointed king "the nations as Your inheritance" and the power to "break them with a rod of iron (שֵׁבֶט בַּרְזֶל, shevet barzel)." Genesis 49:10 prophesies that "the scepter (שֵׁבֶט, shevet) shall not depart from Judah... until Shiloh comes, and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples." Both texts use שֵׁבֶט (shevet, "scepter/rod") in the context of universal dominion extending beyond Israel to all nations/peoples. Jacob's blessing on Judah establishes the tribal origin of the royal line, while Psalm 2 dramatizes the enthronement moment when this Judahite king receives universal authority. The Psalm's scope — "ends of the earth" — develops the scope of Genesis 49's "obedience of the peoples."
