Text: Psalms 81:16
OT Text Referred to: Deuteronomy 32:13
Subject: Wilderness provision (B)
Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
Reference Type: Allusion
Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme
Significance: Psalm 81:16 promises "I would feed you with the finest wheat (חֵלֶב חִטָּה, chelev chittah); with honey from the rock I would satisfy you." Deuteronomy 32:13 uses nearly identical language: "He nourished him with honey from the rock (דְּבַשׁ מִסֶּלַע, devash missel'a) and with oil from the flinty rock." Both texts employ the distinctive motif of supernatural provision from rock — honey and finest produce emerging from stone — as symbols of God's abundant care. The psalm presents this as a conditional promise ("If My people would listen to Me"), while the Song of Moses presents it as historical fact, creating a tension between what God did provide and what Israel forfeited through disobedience.
