Psalms 81:9-10 to Deuteronomy 32:16

Text: Psalms 81:9-10

OT Text Referred to: Deuteronomy 32:16

Subject: Monotheistic claim (B)

Source: Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

Reference Type: Echo

Connection Method(s): None

Significance: Psalm 81:9 prohibits bowing to a "foreign god" (אֵל נֵכָר, el nekhar), while Deuteronomy 32:16 condemns Israel for doing precisely that: "They provoked Him to jealousy with foreign gods (בְּזָרִים, bezarim); with abominations they angered Him." The psalm's warning against foreign gods directly addresses the violation the Song of Moses describes. The Song uses the idolatry as grounds for divine judgment (32:19-25); the psalm presents the prohibition as a conditional promise — "If My people would listen to Me" (81:13) — showing that the same sin the Song condemns could yet be avoided if Israel heeds the liturgical admonition.
