Psalms 96:10 to Psalms 29:1-2

Text: Psalms 96:10

OT Text Referred to: Psalms 29:1-2

Subject: Worship renewal

Source: John Gill, Exposition of the Entire Bible (1763)

Reference Type: Allusion

Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme

Significance: Psalm 96:7-8 calls "Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name" — virtually identical to Psalm 29:1-2: "Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings (בְּנֵי אֵלִים, bene elim), ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name." Both psalms use the tripartite "ascribe" (הָבוּ, havu) formula three times in succession. The key difference: Psalm 29 addresses the heavenly assembly (sons of gods/angels), while Psalm 96 addresses "families of the peoples" (מִשְׁפְּחוֹת עַמִּים) — extending the doxological summons from the heavenly court to all nations on earth, democratizing the angelic call to worship.
