Significance: Exodus 28:29 commands Aaron to "bear the names of the sons of Israel in the breastplate of judgment over his heart (עַל לִבּוֹ, al libbo) when he enters the Holy Place, as a continual memorial before the LORD." Song of Solomon 8:6 uses strikingly similar imagery: "Set me as a seal upon your heart (עַל לִבֶּךָ, al libbeka), as a seal upon your arm." Both texts describe bearing someone's identity close to the heart—the high priest carries Israel's names over his heart before God, and the beloved asks to be impressed upon the lover's heart as an indelible seal. The breastplate's priestly function of perpetual intercession provides the theological backdrop for the Song's intimate metaphor: to be "set upon the heart" is to be carried permanently into the presence of the one who matters most.
